Armagnac
Origins
Armagnac is the oldest recorded brandy on historical record. Armagnac dates back to the early 14th century when a French Cardinal wrote of its 40 virtues. Popularity of the spirit increased in the 15th and 17th centuries as shipping and trade increased around the world. In 1936, Armagnac received its DOM which defined it as a protected spirit that could only be produced in the Armagnac region of France. While Cognac still outsells its cousin around the world, Armagnac has more freedom than Cognac in its production methods and varietals and can some really unique flavors. You can even find roving distillers in the region who have their stills attached to flatbeds on their trucks and roam the countryside distilling the spirit!
There are several categories for aging Armagnac as well:
Blanche - unaged Armagnac
VS (Very Special) - aged at least two years
VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale)- aged at least five years
XO & Napoleon- aged at least six years
Hors d’Age - aged at least 10 years
What Makes it Armagnac?
How is it made?
Armagnac is primarily made from the Ugni Blanc grape but can have blends of Folle Blanche, Colombard, and Baco grapes. It is typically only distilled one time, but can be distilled more than that. One distillation allows for the spirit to maintain its more rustic flavors. It is then aged in French Oak barrels for the desired amount of time.
