Tony Marrone

I started collaging during the 2020 quarantine. It’s a medium that I’ve always wanted to explore; the idea of making something from nothing is appealing to me. It feels good to create a beautiful composition from elements that would otherwise be thrown away. My process usually involves finding an image that I want to work with and building around it, letting elements call out to me as a I sift through piles of material. I think my initial foray into collage was informed by my graphic design training, and I was working very narrowly, trying to find perfect precious images to cut out. But as I’ve continued working I’m finding inspiration in Surrealist, Impressionist and even Renaissance art, and new ways to reinterpret my source material. Collage can seem limited at first, but the possibilities are truly endless.
