Almost two decades ago, Mike Ferrin laced up his first pair of non-slips and walked into a dive-bar dish pit. He left at 4am with chafed hands and a ruined shirt. In the years since he has more-or-less adequately performed every job possible within the service industry. He often forgets the ingredients to classic cocktails and almost never recognizes celebrities when they dine in his section. He is a line cook at heart and the world’s shittiest barista. He’d sooner cut off his fingers than manage a restaurant again. These days Mike can be found meandering through Manhattan dining rooms making up oyster specials as he pleases. He lives in the Bronx with his incredibly supportive partner, Elizabeth, and their one-year-old son, Fawkes.
In the spring of 2020, Mike co-founded 86 Logic, a quarterly(-ish) print magazine dedicated to giving a voice to artists in hospitality. 86 Logic is a platform for previously unheard creatives who, like Mike, aimlessly poke at their pre-brunch family meal (eggs again!) wondering why pirates and line cooks have so much in common. 86 Logic features the freshest poetry, prose, visual art, comics, and interviews sourced from those of us still scraping food from the worn souls soles of our non-slips after each shift.
